Quotes and Thoughts about Grace

Grace has been a theme lately. It's defined as "unmerited favor." God gives it in abundance, thankfully, since none of us can merit His favor.    ("We all like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way" Isaiah 53:6."For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:3)

I have compiled some thoughts, quotes and Bible verses about grace, for meditation and reflection. Here they are:

“Our worst days are never so bad that you are beyond the reach of God's grace. And your best days are never so good that you are beyond the need of God's grace.”  ~Jerry Bridges in The Pursuit of Holiness

Sometimes, for reasons that are unfathomable, God decides to bless us in the midst of sin. It doesn't mean He's decided we have done right or that we don't need to repent. It does mean that He loves us and is gracious to us and will use this for His glory.

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. ~Hebrews 4:16

“The cross is the lightning rod of grace that short-circuits God’s wrath to Christ so that only the light of His love remains for believers.” ~ A. W. Tozer

“Grace, then, is grace,–that is to say, it is sovereign, it is free, it is sure, it is unconditional, and it is everlasting.” ~ Alexander Whyte

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone be found boasting. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." ~Ephesians 2:8-10

"That is the mystery of grace: it never comes too late. ~François Mauriac (1885-1970)

“When the mask of self-righteousness has been torn from us and we stand stripped of all our accustomed defenses, we are candidates for God's generous grace.” -Erwin W. Lutzer (1941- )

“Grace is given to heal the spiritually sick, not to decorate spiritual heroes.” ~Martin Luther (1483-1546)

“A man must completely despair of himself in order to become fit to obtain the grace of Christ.” ~Martin Luther (1483-1546)

Do any of these particularly "grab" you?  Do you know of any others?

My blog site is currently a "work in progress." I am playing with the look, reducing the amount of advertising and consilidating the labels so that things are easier to find. Comments and suggestions welcome. Look for changes over the next few weeks.

This is my second post for the October 2012 Ultimate Blog Challenge. I'm trying for 31 posts in 31 days, plus commenting on two posts by other people every day.

  1. I like the one by Luther about grace not decorating spiritual heroes.

    1. That is a good one. Reminds me of Christ saying, "I come not to call the righteous, but the sinner to repentance."
